โ Open Items โ resolve before the phase that needs them
Audit findings from cross-checking the plan, both invoices, and these instructions (Aug 2026). Cross each off as it's handled. The buy-list items below are all folded into the Hardware Swap List.
โ Bushka return (TIME-SENSITIVE): LPC6Z caps (9) + LUS28Z hangers (35) still need to go back โ the 60-day return window on Order #2 (dated 4/21) closed ~6/20. Ask for goodwill credit since the store spec'd the substitution. Needed before: whenever โ but sooner is better.
โ Make the swap-list purchase (~$840): NOTHING on the buy list has been purchased yet โ no framing bolts, no Simpson screws, no railing hardware, no balusters. Phase 1 can't start without the SD10 screws; Phase 2 needs the beam bolts. Needed before: Phase 1.
โ Balusters (~130): Not on either invoice and missing from the plan's own material list. Buy ~45 pcs 2x2x8 PT (or DecksGo Snap'n Lock aluminum kits: 11 deck + 3 stair). Needed before: Phase 7.
โ Guard post bolts โ 4 per post, not 2: Plan A3.2's Railing Post note calls for (4) 1/2" bolts per 4x4 post. Buy list now says 40 carriage bolts. Needed before: Phase 7.
โ Beam bolts โ buy 6-1/2", not 6": 5-1/2" of wood + washer + nut makes a 6" bolt marginal. Plan says 6" minimum, so 6-1/2" is compliant and comfortable. Needed before: Phase 2.
โ Trex plug screws: On-hand 2" screws are "Enhance boards ONLY." Confirm with Bushka the correct screw for the Rainier plug system on Transcend Lineage (e.g., Cortex for Transcend), ~150 needed. Needed before: Phase 6.
โ Stair treads/risers decision: Use the 12ร 2x6x16 from Order #2 โ two 2x6 per tread, one 2x6 per riser opening (closes open risers to pass the 4" sphere rule). Or buy 3ร 2x12x8 for single-board treads. Needed before: Phase 7.
โ Pool barrier / gate code check with inspector: CT commonly requires a self-closing, self-latching gate at deck stairs serving a pool, and may require 48" barrier height. Confirm whether the 36" rail + gate satisfies local code before building rails at 36". Needed before: Phase 7 (ideally at permit).
โ Extra 2x8x8 for curved-rim blocking: Blocking stock from offcuts alone is tight. Needed before: Phase 4.
Install Simpson ABA66Z post anchors with 1/2" wedge anchors. Rough-cut each 6x6 post to its saddle-to-laser measurement + ~6" (heights vary with the slope), install and plumb on anchors, then laser-mark, cut to height, and notch in place.
Install 9 Simpson ABA66Z post anchors with 1/2" wedge anchors on cured concrete footings. Rough-cut nine 6x6 PT posts, install and plumb them on the anchors, then use the laser to mark final height and cut and notch each post IN PLACE.

Part A: Install ABA66Z Post Bases
Step 1: Mark Post Centers on Concrete
1Mark the post center on each footing top.
Use plumb bob dropped from the string crossing above (if strings still up), OR triangulate from adjacent footings using measured distances.
Step 2: Drill Center Anchor Hole
2Drill a single 1/2" hole at each post center mark.
1/2" SDS-Plus bit in the rotary hammer
Drill depth: 4-1/2" to 5"
This depth leaves about 1-1/4" of anchor threads sticking up above the concrete โ enough to fit the ABA66Z base plate, washer, and nut on top
Drilling slightly deeper than needed is fine โ extra room at the bottom holds any residual dust
Blow dust out with shop vac or compressed air
Silica dust: Wear a P100 respirator when drilling concrete.
Step 3: Position ABA66Z Base and Install Anchor
3Place the ABA66Z base plate over the drilled hole, then drive the anchor through both.
Set the ABA66Z base plate on the concrete with its center hole lined up over the drilled hole
Slide the base to fine-tune position over your post center mark (up to about 3/4" of adjustment in the slotted hole)
Drop the 1/2" x 5-1/2" Torquemaster wedge anchor down through the base plate's center hole and into the drilled hole in the concrete
The nut and washer come pre-assembled on top of the anchor from the factory โ LEAVE THEM ON (they protect the threads during hammering)
Tap the top of the nut with a hammer, driving the anchor down through the base and into the hole
Stop when the base plate is flat against the concrete and about 1-1/4" of threads (including the nut) is above the base plate
Why this order: Setting the base plate first, then driving the anchor through it, means the anchor stays put once it's set โ no need to remove the nut, slide the base on, and re-thread the nut. One clean install.
Step 4: Torque the Anchor
4Tighten the nut to the specified torque.
Use a torque wrench with 3/4" socket
Target: 55-60 ft-lbs (industry standard for 1/2" wedge anchors)
Check the packaging or instructions that came with your Torquemaster anchors โ if the manufacturer specifies a different value, follow their spec
Torqueing pulls the wedge up inside the anchor, expanding it against the concrete walls
Anchor is now permanently locked in place
Concrete strength note: Quikrete 5000 reaches 5,000 psi at 28 days โ well above what wedge anchors are designed for (specs are typically based on 2,500-4,000 psi concrete). At 7 days cure, Quikrete 5000 is already around 3,500 psi. Higher-strength concrete gives you MORE holding power, not less, and doesn't change the install torque.
Use a torque wrench for the final set โ not an impact driver. Impact drivers can over-torque and either strip the anchor threads or crack the concrete around the anchor.
Part B: Rough-Cut and Install Posts
Method: Instead of measuring each post length and cutting on the ground, posts are installed OVER-LENGTH, then marked with the laser and cut to final height in place. This eliminates measure-and-transfer errors โ the laser line IS the reference, marked directly on the standing post.
Step 5: Set Laser at Deck-Top Elevation
5Set the 360ยฐ laser at the top of the pool coping elevation.
Position tripod centrally to the deck area with line-of-sight to all 9 footings
Adjust tripod height until the laser line is level with the top of the pool coping
Turn on laser, let it self-level
The horizontal line now marks deck-top elevation at every footing โ it drives both the rough cuts (this step) and the final cuts (Part C)
Step 6: Rough-Cut Each Post โ Measured, Not One Fixed Length
The yard slopes heavily, so post heights vary a lot โ back-row posts will be noticeably taller than pool-side posts. Do NOT rough-cut all 9 to one length. Each post gets its own quick measurement.
6Measure each footing and rough-cut its post to that measurement plus margin.
At each footing, hold the tape on the ABA66Z saddle and measure up to the laser line โ a rough number is fine (ยฑ1/2" doesn't matter here; precision comes later from marking in place)
Rough post length = saddle-to-laser measurement + ~6"
Each footing has its own 12' 6x6, so length is never a constraint โ the rough cut only sheds weight and excess (a 12' 6x6 is ~120 lbs; a 4-6' rough post is half that)
Label each post with its footing ID as you cut ("PSL" = pool-side-left, "BR" = back-right, etc.) โ with 9 different lengths, mixups are easy
Use the four-sided cut technique: mark all 4 faces with Speed Square, cut each face at full saw depth (~2-5/8"), finish the center with Sawzall
Save the offcuts โ lengths will vary, and they're free stock for curved-rim blocking and bench legs
Step 7: Mark the Notch Face on Each Post
Do this BEFORE standing each post. Once 8 screws are driven through the ABA66Z, the post cannot be rotated. Mark the face that will get notched (the beam-side face) on the TOP of each post with a big marker arrow, and orient all 9 posts consistently as you set them. Beams run PERPENDICULAR to the pool โ see the notch diagram below in Part D.
Step 8: Set, Plumb, Screw, and Brace Each Post
8Install each rough-cut post into its ABA66Z saddle โ completely.
Match each labeled post to its footing (9 different lengths โ check the label)
Set the post into the U-saddle, notch-face arrow pointing the correct direction (consistent on all 9)
Post bottom rests on the base plate (1" standoff above concrete)
Plumb in both directions using the strap-on post level or a 4' level on two adjacent faces
Drive Simpson SD10 ร 2-1/2" screws (SD10212) through EVERY hole in the ABA66Z flanges โ 8 screws per anchor
Add temporary bracing: 2 ร 2x4 diagonal braces per post (90ยฐ apart), one end screwed to the post mid-height, other end to a ground stake
Fill every hole in the ABA66Z. Skipping holes reduces the anchor's rated load capacity per Simpson's spec table (920 lb uplift, 11,415 lb download when fully fastened). The post must be rigid โ plumbed, fully screwed, and braced โ before any in-place cutting in Part C.
Part C: Mark and Cut Posts to Final Height โ In Place
The laser was set at pool-coping elevation back in Step 5. If any time has passed or the tripod may have been bumped, verify the line still sits level with the top of the coping before marking.
Step 9: Mark the Cut Line on Each Post
Cut line = laser line โ 8-1/4"
The 8-1/4" accounts for:
1" for Trex decking thickness (Trex Transcend is 0.94", round to 1")
7-1/4" for 2x8 joist depth (actual dimension of nominal 2x8)
The beam sits IN the notch (cut into the top of the post), so beam depth isn't subtracted.
9Mark each post where it needs to be cut.
Tick the laser line directly on one face of the post with a pencil
Measure DOWN 8-1/4" from that tick and make the cut mark
Wrap the cut line around all 4 faces with a Speed Square โ the wrapped line must close on itself back at the start (if it doesn't, re-square and re-mark)
Repeat on all 9 posts. Each post's cut line will be at a different height off the ground (grade slopes) but all cut lines are at the SAME elevation โ that's the point of marking off the laser
Step 10: Cut Each Post at the Line โ In Place
10Cut each standing post at its marked line using the four-sided technique.
Verify the post is rigid (fully screwed and braced) before cutting
Set circular saw to full depth (~2-5/8" max on the 2834-20)
Cut face 1, move around the post: face 2, face 3, face 4, keeping the shoe registered on the marked line
The uncut center (~1/4" square) finishes with Sawzall or handsaw
The cut lands around chest height on most posts โ comfortable working height, but keep two hands on the saw and stand clear of the falling offcut
After cutting all 9, sweep the laser across the post tops as a check: every top should now sit exactly 8-1/4" below the laser line. Any post more than 1/8" off โ re-cut or plan a shim in the notch.
Part D: Notch Post Tops โ In Place

Notch orientation: Beams run PERPENDICULAR to the pool through each column of 3 posts. The notch is cut into ONE face (left or right) at the top of the post, forming an L-shaped corner cutout. Do NOT notch through the center of the post.

Step 11: Cut the Notch
11Cut the notch on each standing post.
Mark the notch outline on the marked beam-side face: from the post top, measure DOWN 7-1/4" and square a line across that face โ this is the notch shoulder
Set circular saw to max depth (~2-5/8") and cut the horizontal shoulder line โ this cut is at chest height and easy to control
Make a series of horizontal kerf cuts every 1/2" from the shoulder up to the post top, across the notch face
Knock out the kerfed waste with chisel and hammer
Clean the notch shoulder (bottom) and back wall flat with the chisel
The saw only cuts 2-5/8" deep; finish the last 3/8" of notch depth with chisel or handsaw to get the full 3" depth.
In-place notching note: The horizontal kerf cuts are comfortable at standing height, but there's no way to register the saw shoe for a vertical rip from the post top โ that's why this method uses kerf-and-chisel only. Expect ~15-20 minutes per post. If the first post fights you, the fallback is clean: mark the notch, back out the 8 SD10 screws, notch the post on sawhorses, and reinstall โ the ABA66Z saddle re-seats the post identically, so no accuracy is lost. (New screws in the same holes are fine per Simpson if the holes aren't stripped.)
All 9 notches must face the same direction (all left OR all right) so beams align consistently through their columns. This was locked in back in Step 6 when you marked the notch faces โ verify the arrow before cutting each notch.
Completion Checklist
All 9 anchor bolts drilled and torqued to spec (55-60 ft-lbs, or per anchor packaging)

Common Problems & Fixes
Wedge anchor spins when tightening
Hole is oversized or concrete crumbled around it. Move to a new location if possible, or use epoxy to secure.
Post is 1/4" too tall
Trim with circular saw.
Post is 1/4" too short
Shim under the beam later with hardwood or 1/4" plywood shim placed in the notch.
ABA66Z position drifts off center before tightening
Loosen nut, slide base horizontally to correct position (up to 3/4" adjustment available), retighten.
Post won't plumb
Check that ABA66Z is centered on the anchor slot. Loosen anchor nut, adjust base position slightly, retighten. Then re-plumb post. If post is warped, rotate 90ยฐ and try a different face โ this only works BEFORE the SD10 screws go in, another reason to plumb carefully before screwing.
Four-sided cut doesn't meet โ ledge at the center
The wrapped line didn't close on itself, or the saw shoe drifted. Small ledge (1/16"): knock flat with a chisel or rasp โ the beam won't care. Larger: re-wrap the line with the Speed Square 1/4" lower and re-cut all four faces.
In-place notching is fighting you
Mark the notch, back out the 8 SD10 screws, notch the post on sawhorses, reinstall in the saddle, re-plumb, drive the screws back. The saddle re-seats the post identically โ no accuracy lost.
SD10 screw won't drive fully
PT lumber can be very dry. Predrill with a 3/16" bit through the ABA66Z flange hole into the post first, then drive the SD10 screw.
Phase 2: Beams
Build three 2-ply 2x8 PT beams. Install in notched post tops. Bolt with (2) 1/2" x 6-1/2" bolts per post connection (plan says 6" minimum โ buy 6-1/2", see hardware note below).
Beam Layout
Three beams run PERPENDICULAR to the pool, through each column of 3 posts:
LEFT column beam: connects pool-side-left โ middle-left โ back-left
RIGHT column beam: connects pool-side-right โ middle-right โ back-right
Each beam sits in NOTCHES on 3 posts and cantilevers 2'-0" past the outer posts on both ends. Total beam length โ 14'-8". See Phase 1 post grid diagram for the top-down layout.
Wait for cure: Do not install beams until concrete has cured at least 7 days.

Part A: Build the Beams (Ground Work)
Step 1: Cut Beam Members to Length
1Cut 2 pieces of 2x8 PT for each of the 3 beams (6 pieces total).
You have 4 pieces of 2x8ร16' (Order #1) for 2 beams (2 plies ร 2 beams = 4 pieces)
Plus 2 pieces of 2x8ร14' (Order #1) for the third beam (2 plies ร 1 beam = 2 pieces)
Target beam length after cutting: ~14'-8" (10'-8" post-to-post + 2'-0" cantilever each end)
The 16' pieces have plenty of length to cut down to 14'-8" (trim 1'-4")
The 14' pieces are 8" SHORT of a full 14'-8" beam. Options: (a) reduce that beam's cantilever to 1'-8" each side (total 14'), or (b) use asymmetric cantilevers (2' + 1'-4")
Use Speed Square for square cuts
Which beam gets the shorter 14' pieces? Use them for the MIDDLE column beam. That beam's ends are cantilevered but not near the deck corners, so slightly reduced cantilever is structurally fine. The OUTER two column beams (from 16' pieces) get the full 14'-8" length with full 2' cantilevers.
Step 2: Check for Crown
2Sight along each 2x8 to find its natural crown (bow).
Look along the length of the board from one end โ you'll see a slight bow (concave on one edge, convex on the other)
The "crown" is the convex edge โ the one that bows upward when the concave edge is down
Mark the crown side with an arrow pointing UP toward the crown
Both plies get installed with the crown facing UP
Over time, deck load will flatten the crown, leaving the beam straight rather than sagging
Step 3: Laminate the 2 Plies
Per A3.1 detail 02: "#10 WOOD SCREWS MIN. 2-1/2" LONG, STAGGERED IN 2 ROWS. 16" TYPICAL. 2 THREADED SCREWS AT EACH END."
3Screw the two 2x8s together face-to-face.
Lay both 2x8s face-to-face on sawhorses, both crowns pointing UP, top edges flush, ends flush
Chalk two horizontal lines down the length of the beam face:
Top row: 2" down from the top edge of the beam
Bottom row: 2" up from the bottom edge of the beam
(For a 7-1/4" tall 2x8, these two rows will be ~3-1/4" apart)
Mark screw positions along each row:
Top row: mark positions at 0", 16", 32", 48"... every 16" along the length
Bottom row: mark positions offset by 8" from the top row: 8", 24", 40", 56"... every 16"
The result is a zig-zag pattern โ screws alternate between the two rows every 8"
Drive #10 x 2-1/2" screws at each marked position
At each end of the beam: 2 extra screws concentrated in the last 6" (one in top row, one in bottom row, closer together than the 16" spacing)
Beam laminated face-to-face. Row 1 at 2" from top, Row 2 at 2" from bottom. Screws every 16" per row, offset 8" so alternates every 8" along the beam. Extra pair at each end.
Count: ~11 screws per row ร 2 rows = ~22 screws per beam + 4 end screws = ~26 per beam. Times 3 beams = ~78 screws total.
Part B: Install Beams on Posts
Step 4: Lift Beam Onto Posts
4Lift each 2-ply beam onto the 3 notched posts of its column.
Two people minimum (beam weighs ~90 lbs)
Position beam so it drops into the notches on all 3 posts
Beam bottom rests on the notch shoulder (bottom of notch)
Beam ends extend 2'-0" past outer posts (pool-side and back)
Cantilever check: Measure from the outer post face to the end of the beam on both sides โ should be 2'-0" (24") equal on each end. Slide the beam if needed before securing.
Step 5: Verify Beam Level
5Use laser or level to verify beam top is level along its length.
Sweep laser along the beam top
All 3 post positions should show the beam at the same elevation
Small variances (up to 1/8") can be shimmed with hardwood shims in the notch
Larger variances mean a post is at wrong height โ address before bolting
Step 6: Drill and Bolt Beam to Each Post
Per A3.1 detail 01: "(2) 1/2" DIAMETER x 6" LONG (MIN.) BOLTS WITH WASHERS"

Understanding the geometry: Because you notched the posts, the beam sits INSIDE a cutout in the top of each post. Looking down from above, the notch removed 3" of the post (making room for the beam), and 2-1/2" of post material remains behind the beam. The bolts pass through the remaining 2-1/2" of post material AND through the 3" thick beam โ a total of 5-1/2" of material. That's why the buy list specifies 6-1/2" bolts: a 6" bolt (the plan's stated minimum) leaves only ~1/2" for the washer and nut, which is marginal; 6-1/2" gives a full inch of thread on the far side.
6At each post, drill and install 2 through-bolts.
Work on the "back side" of the post โ the face opposite the notch opening, where the solid 2-1/2" of post material remains behind the beam
Mark bolt locations on this back face:
Top bolt: 2" down from the top edge of the beam
Bottom bolt: 2" up from the bottom edge of the beam
(Bolts end up about 3-1/4" apart vertically)
Drill a 1/2" hole all the way through: post material (2-1/2") then beam (3") = 5-1/2" total drilling per hole
Insert the 1/2" x 6-1/2" bolt from the back side of the post (bolt head on the outside)
The threaded end will come out through the front of the beam (into the notch cavity or beyond)
Add a washer, then thread the nut on the front side
Tighten with a 3/4" wrench โ firm but not over-tightened (don't crush the wood)
Drill BOTH bolt holes at one post before inserting either bolt, then install both bolts together. This keeps the beam from shifting between drill operations.
Bit length: You need a 1/2" drill bit at least 9" long (or a 12" ship auger bit) to reach all the way through the post + beam and still have shank in the drill chuck. Standard 6" bits are too short.
Step 7: Repeat for All 3 Beams
7Install left, middle, and right column beams the same way.
Each beam gets 6 bolts total (2 per post ร 3 posts). Total for all 3 beams: 18 bolts.
Part C: Verify Alignment
Step 8: Check Beams Parallel
8Measure between adjacent beams at multiple points.
Left beam to middle beam: should be about 60" (5'-0")
Middle beam to right beam: should be about 60"
Measure at pool-side end, middle, and back end of each beam
All measurements should match within 1/4"
Step 9: Verify Beam Tops at Same Elevation
9Use laser to verify all 3 beam tops are at the same level.
Any variance greater than 1/8" between beams means joists won't sit flat. Address by shimming beams or trimming posts before proceeding.

Common Problems & Fixes
Beam doesn't sit level across 3 posts
Verify each post is the same height. If one post is 1/4" too tall, trim with Sawzall. If too short, shim with hardwood shim in the notch.
Cantilever isn't 2'-0" equal on both ends
Slide beam left or right in the notches to center it before bolting. If beam is too short overall, cantilever less on each end. If too long, trim off excess.
Beam won't drop into notch
Notch may be too shallow or narrow. Re-check dimensions (7-1/4" deep ร 3" wide). Enlarge with chisel or Sawzall.
1/2" bolt is tight in hole
Use 9/16" drill bit instead of 1/2" for easier bolt insertion. Still holds securely.
Phase 3: Joists
Install 2x8 PT joists across the 3 beams at 12" OC MODIFIED (plan called for 16" OC). Attach with Simpson H2.5AZ hurricane ties. Apply Trex Protect joist tape after installation.
Joist Layout
Top-down. Joists (brown) run PARALLEL to pool, resting on top of 3 beams (red/perpendicular). ~15-16 joists at 12" OC across the depth. Outer joists become the LEFT and RIGHT rim joists.
Original plan calls for 11 joists at 16" OC. We're using 12" OC for firmer Trex Transcend Lineage composite feel. That's why the invoice shows 16 joists (11 from Order 1 + 5 from Order 2) โ matches the tighter spacing.

Part A: Layout Joist Positions on Beams
Do the layout BEFORE applying joist tape. Once the tape is on the beam tops, chalk marks won't hold well. Mark joist positions on the SIDES of the beams (a small vertical tick mark on the beam face) so the marks stay visible after taping.
Step 1: Mark First Joist Position
1Mark the first joist position at the back edge of the deck.
The first joist runs along the back edge of the deck (farthest from pool)
Draw a tick mark on the SIDE of each of the 3 beams at that position โ vertical mark on the beam's face, extending down about 1"
Do this on all 3 beams so the marks line up when the joist is placed

Step 3: Cut Joists to Length
3Cut each 2x8 joist to length.
Joist length depends on final beam positions plus any cantilever
Typical: about 14 feet long (deck width + small overhang each side)

Part B: Apply Joist Tape to Beam Tops
Why joist tape: Trex Protect tape prevents water from sitting on top of the joist/beam, which causes rot. Especially important on a pool deck with constant water exposure. Apply BEFORE setting joists so the joist bottom sits on top of the tape.
Step 4: Apply 3-1/8" Tape to Beam Tops
4Apply Trex Protect 3-1/8" tape to the top of each beam.
The 2-ply beam is 3" wide โ the 3-1/8" tape covers the top edge with a small overhang on each side (about 1/16" each side)
Clean beam top with a rag (remove sawdust and debris)
Peel backing 6-12" at a time (avoids the tape sticking to itself before you get it in position)
Start at one end of the beam, press tape down along the top
Roll firmly with a J-roller, rolling pin, or press hard with your hand to activate the adhesive
Continue along the entire length of each beam
Repeat for all 3 beams
Your tick marks on the beam sides should still be visible below the tape
Part C: Install Joists
Step 5: Check Each Joist for Crown
5Sight along each joist to find the crown.
Look along the length of the board from one end โ you'll see a slight bow (concave on one edge, convex on the other)
The "crown" is the convex edge โ the one that bows upward when the concave edge is down
Mark the crown side with an arrow pointing UP toward the crown
Always install joists CROWN UP โ deck load will flatten the bow over time
Step 6: Set Each Joist on the Beams
6Place each joist on the beams at its tick mark, crown up.
The joist sits on top of all 3 beams simultaneously (perpendicular to the beams)

Fill EVERY hole in each hurricane tie. Per Simpson's data sheet, skipping holes reduces the tie's rated uplift capacity below its 415 lb rating. Simpson only guarantees the load rating when all fasteners are installed.
Step 8: Repeat for All Joists
8Install all ~15-16 joists at 12" OC across the deck.
Work systematically from one end of the deck to the other
Verify each joist is at its correct tick mark before installing hurricane ties

Joist won't sit flat on all 3 beams
One beam is high or low. Address the beam issue first (shim or trim), then install joist.
Joist looks bowed after installation
Normal if crown is UP. Deck load will flatten it over months. If severe, replace that joist.
H2.5AZ tie flanges don't wrap around 2-ply beam
H2.5AZ is designed for 2-ply beams (up to 3" wide). Verify orientation โ flanges should wrap around the top corner of the beam and the side of the joist. If flanges are too short, verify you have H2.5AZ (not H1 which is for single 2x).
Joist tape won't stick
Surface may be wet or dirty. Wipe clean with dry rag. If PT lumber is still wet from treatment, let it dry a few days before taping. Warmer temperatures help adhesion.
Joist tape tears while installing
Peel backing more gradually. Press tape into place as you go rather than trying to align a long piece at once.
Missed a joist position โ spacing is off
Remove the misplaced joist, reset at correct 12" OC location, reinstall hurricane ties. Better to fix now than after Trex is on.
Phase 4: Rim Joist & Curved Section
Install rim joists on the LEFT and RIGHT sides to tie the joist ends together. Kerf-cut a 2x8 to follow the pool's curve for the pool-side rim. The back edge uses the outermost joist itself (no separate back rim needed). Add blocking per plan.
Understanding the layout: Because joists run parallel to the pool (in the WIDTH direction), the joist ENDS are on the LEFT and RIGHT sides of the deck. Those two sides need rim joists to tie the joist ends together and hold everything square. The FRONT (pool side) and BACK edges run PARALLEL to the joists โ the outermost joist on each side essentially IS the rim for that edge. The pool side gets an additional kerf-cut 2x8 fastened to the front-most joist to form the curved edge.
Rim Joist Layout
Top-down. LEFT/RIGHT rims run perpendicular to joists (~14'-8" long each, from 16' stock). CURVED rim on pool side is kerf-cut from a 15' piece (16' stock trimmed). BACK edge is the back-most joist itself.
Blocking: Per A1.0 detail 02, provide 2x8 wood blocking at 12" OC between the pool-side (front-most) joist and the curved rim joist. These short pieces support the curved rim's kerfed back face. Physical reality of the curve: The pool sits behind the deck. The pool's curve bulges toward the deck at the center of the width and tapers back at the edges. The front-most joist is a STRAIGHT board parallel to the pool. So the space between the front-most joist and where the curved rim needs to sit VARIES โ smallest at the deck's center, largest at the edges. Blocking pieces fill this varying gap, providing solid backing for the curved rim.
5Mark curved rim positions and cut blocking to fit.
Along the front-most joist, mark tick marks every 12" (from left to right)
At each tick mark, measure from the front face of the joist STRAIGHT OUT toward the pool, until you're at 1" from the pool coping
That measurement = the length of the blocking piece at that position
Cut a 2x8 scrap to that length
Screw one end of the block to the front of the front-most joist (2 ร 3" screws)
Repeat at every 12" tick mark across the 14' pool-side edge (~14 blocks total)
The block ends form a "curved outline" pointing toward the pool โ the curved rim will attach to those ends
Block lengths will vary โ could be as short as ~2" near the deck's center and up to ~1'-6" near the deck's edges. Measure each individually. Don't assume uniform length.
Step 6: Bend the Rim Onto the Blocks
6Bend the kerfed 2x8 against the exposed ends of the blocks, following the pool curve at 1" from the coping.

About Fascia on the Curved Section
The plan material list includes 1x10 PT fascia for the STRAIGHT edges (back, left, right). The pool-side curved rim doesn't need fascia โ it's not visible (tucked between pool and deck edge with Trex overhang).
The plan RIM JOIST/FASCIA DETAIL shows kerf specs for fascia in case it's wanted, but it's optional. Straight fascia gets installed later (after decking).
Common Problems & Fixes
Curved rim won't bend enough
Kerfs need to be closer (try 3/8") or deeper. Test on scrap first.
Curved rim snapped when bending
Kerfs too deep or bent too fast. Replace board, kerf 1-1/8" deep instead, bend slowly.
Curve isn't smooth โ flat spots
Some kerfs didn't compress evenly. Add pressure at flat spots while adhesive is wet. Screw joist there to force curve.
Pool offset varies 1/2" to 2"
Joist ends not aligned with intended curve. Trim over-long joists shorter or accept curve as-is.
Phase 5: Diagonal Bracing
Install permanent 2x4 diagonal bracing between posts and beams. Required per A3.4 detail 02 since deck exceeds 2' above grade.
Per A3.4 detail 02: "IF HEIGHT OF DECK IS TO BE GREATER THAN 2' ABOVE GRADE, 2X4 WOOD DIAGONAL BRACING IS TO BE USED"
What the bracing does: The diagonal 2x4s form triangles between the posts and beams. Triangles don't flex โ they lock the frame against side-to-side movement (called "racking"). Without bracing, a tall deck can sway when someone jumps or leans against a rail.
Bracing Geometry (per A3.4 detail 02)

Step 4: Bolt Each Brace
4Per A3.4 detail 02: attach each brace with two 3/8" x 8" carriage bolts.
Hold the brace in position, angled between the beam and post marks
Mark the bolt hole locations on the brace (centered on the 2x4, about 1" in from each end)
Remove brace, drill 3/8" hole through the brace at each mark
Hold the brace back in position, use it as a guide to drill 3/8" holes through the beam (one hole) and through the post (one hole)
Insert a 3/8" x 8" carriage bolt at each end (bolt head on the brace side, since carriage bolt heads are smooth and don't need a wrench)
On the far side (through the beam or post), add washer and nut
Tighten with 9/16" socket wrench until snug
Carriage bolt orientation: The rounded carriage bolt head has a square shoulder just below it that bites into the wood, so the bolt won't spin when you tighten the nut. Insert the bolt so this square shoulder embeds into the BRACE (soft PT wood). If you insert it backwards, tightening the nut will just spin the bolt.
Step 5: Repeat for All Locations
5Install all 12 braces (4 per beam column ร 3 columns).

Brace doesn't fit โ angle is wrong
Verify the marks on beam and post are BOTH 24" from the post-beam junction. Re-cut the brace at exact 45ยฐ angles. Speed Square makes this easy.
Bolt spins when tightening
Carriage bolt is backwards. The square shoulder must embed into the wood on the head side. Remove, flip, reinsert.
3/8" bit is tight in the hole
Use a 7/16" bit instead โ carriage bolt will still hold securely and slides in more easily.
Deck still feels wobbly after bracing
Check that all post-anchor nuts are torqued to 55-60 ft-lbs. Check hurricane ties are fully screwed. Verify no beam-post bolts are loose. If still wobbly, add more bracing at outer corners.
Drill bit too short
A 3/8" bit needs to reach through the brace (1-1/2") + beam (3") or post (5-1/2") = at least 5" to 7" of drilling depth. A 6" or 8" long twist bit works.

Install Trex Transcend Lineage Rainier composite decking with Trex Universal Hidden Clips in the field. Perimeter and pool-side curve with color-matched plugs.

Step 4: Install First Board Along One Side Edge
Board orientation reminder: Each Trex board runs FRONT-TO-BACK (its 14'-8" length spans from pool-side to back-side). Boards are laid side-by-side across the 14' WIDTH of the deck. So the "first board" is at one WIDTH edge (LEFT or RIGHT), and subsequent boards are laid alongside it moving toward the other edge.
4Install the first board along the LEFT or RIGHT edge of the deck (either works โ pick one and start).
Take a 16' Trex board and cut to the exact length needed to span from the back-most joist to just short of the pool coping (~14'-8" typical, minus 1" clearance to pool coping)
Trex Transcend Lineage has grooves on BOTH long edges โ either edge can face outward
Position the board so its long edge sits at the LEFT (or RIGHT) rim joist
The BACK short end of the board should overhang the back-most joist by about 3/4" (up to 2" max per Trex spec)
The FRONT short end of the board terminates at the 1" gap from the pool coping
Because this is the outermost board with no clip on the outboard side, FACE-SCREW the outboard side of this first board through its top into every joist below (2 screws per joist)
Predrill each screw hole โ especially within 2" of the board's ends, where composite splits easily
Use Trex-approved fasteners with Trex color-matched plugs to hide the screw heads
The INBOARD long edge (facing the interior of the deck) accepts the Universal Hidden Clips for the next board
Only the first board (outer side) and the last board (other outer side) need face-screwing along their outboard long edges. Every board in between is held by Universal Hidden Clips.
Step 5: Install Universal Hidden Clips
5Install Trex Universal Hidden Clips in the INBOARD long-edge groove of the first board.
Tap clip into groove at each joist crossing

Part C: Field Installation
Step 6: Add Successive Boards

Our deck doesn't need board splicing. Each Trex board is cut from a 16' piece to ~14'-8" length โ single continuous board spans the full deck depth. No end-joints needed except at the curved pool-side where each board terminates at the pool curve (covered in Part D).
Part D: Pool-Side Curved Edge
Concept: Because boards run PERPENDICULAR to the pool (front-to-back), each board's FRONT SHORT END terminates at the pool curve. That means every board along the pool side is a slightly different length โ longer at the deck's left and right edges (where the pool is further away) and shorter at the deck's center (where the pool curves closest to the deck).
Step 9: Cut Each Board to Its Pool-Side Length
9For each board as you install it, measure and cut its pool-side end to hit the 1" gap from the pool coping.
With the board laid in position (clips engaged on both long edges), measure from the front end of the board to the pool coping
Determine how much to trim off the FRONT END to leave a 1" gap between the Trex edge and the pool coping (per A1.2)
Mark the cut line on the board's top face โ this will be roughly perpendicular to the board length, but adjust based on the local curvature of the pool
Board length at deck center (closest to pool): shortest, maybe 13' or less
Board length at deck left/right edges (furthest from pool): longest, close to 14'-8"
Step 10: Cut Trim with Jigsaw

Boards drifting out of parallel
Sight along boards frequently. Adjust clip tightness or slightly widen gaps to correct drift.
Universal Hidden Clips won't seat fully
Joist tops not coplanar. Plane high joists or shim low ones. Or joist tape has a bump โ smooth it flat.
Curved cuts chipping
Blade dull or cutting too fast. Change blade, cut slower. Score cut line with utility knife first for cleaner edge.
Board bulging or bowing after install
Composite expands with heat. Verify 1/4" gap between boards. Verify 1/8" gap at ends. Bulging usually means no room for thermal expansion.
Screws stripping in composite
Predrill. Adjust impact driver torque. Only use Trex-approved screws โ not standard deck screws.
Plug doesn't match color perfectly
Verify you have Rainier plugs (not a different Trex color). Slight color variation is normal โ deck weathers to match over time.
Phase 7: Railings, Stairs, Benches
Build the 36" guardrails, install stairs down to grade, and optionally add benches.
Guardrails 36" tall minimum. Balusters spaced so a 4" sphere cannot pass through. Handrails required on stairs with 4+ risers.
โ MATERIALS NOT YET PURCHASED FOR THIS PHASE: The railing lumber (4x4 posts, 2x6 caps, 2x4 rails) is on hand from Order #1, but as of Aug 2026 nothing else is: no balusters (~130 needed โ not on either invoice), no guard-post carriage bolts (40 needed โ 4 per post per A3.2, not 2), no #8 baluster screws, no 3" structural screws, no LSCZ stringer hangers, no stair-rail 2x4s. See the Hardware Swap List for the full shopping list before starting this phase.
โ POOL CODE โ settle before building rails: This deck serves an above-ground pool. CT jurisdictions commonly require the stair to have a self-closing, self-latching gate (latch 54" up), and some require 48" barrier height rather than 36". Confirm with the building department whether 36" rails + a gate satisfy the pool barrier code before cutting posts to 36" โ retrofitting taller rails is expensive. (Also flagged in the verification doc inspector list.)

Example โ for our deck at ~54-1/4" above grade at the stair location:

โฐ RETURN WINDOW โ ACT NOW: Bushka's policy is "no returns after 60 days." Order #2 (which contains the LPC6Z caps and LUS28Z hangers) is dated 4/21/2026 โ the 60-day window closed around 6/20/2026. If the return hasn't happened yet, bring it up anyway and ask for goodwill credit since the store spec'd the substitution. Worst case: keep the LUS28Z hangers as spares (usable on future projects); the LPC6Z caps have no use on this build.
Beam-to-post through-bolts (2 per beam-post ร 9 posts). Buy 6-1/2", not 6": the bolt passes through 5-1/2" of wood (2-1/2" post + 3" beam) โ a 6" bolt leaves barely enough thread for washer + nut. Plan says 6" MINIMUM; 6-1/2" gives comfortable engagement.
Guardrail post to rim/outer joist โ 4 per post ร ~10 posts per plan A3.2 (the RAILING POST note calls for "4 - 1/2" DIAMETER X 6" LONG (MIN.) BOLTS AND WASHERS" โ earlier drafts of this list said 2 per post, which matches only the stair-guardrail detail). Through 4x4 post (3-1/2") + rim (1-1/2") = 5" of wood; 6-1/2" fits well. 8" also works with extra thread showing.

Stair treads & risers โ no purchase needed, but a decision is: The instructions originally called for 2x12 treads, but the four 2x12x10s are consumed by stringers. The 12 pcs of 2x6x16 on Order #2 cover this: use two 2x6 per tread (11" + gap, standard detail, pairs with the 10" run) and one 2x6 per riser opening (a 5-1/2" board in the 7-3/4" opening leaves ~2-1/4" โ passes the 4" sphere rule required for open risers on stairs more than 30" up). That uses ~76 LF of the 192 LF on hand, leaving plenty for stair rail cap and benches. If you'd rather have single-board treads, buy 3 pcs 2x12x8 PT instead.

Items to Verify Before Building
Curved rim 15' 2x8: Not clearly on Order #1 invoice as separate item. Verify with store that one of the 3 pcs 2x8x16' (labeled RIM JOIST/BLKG) can be used for the curved rim (16' cut down to 15').
2x4 railing support quantities: Plan wants 2ร16', 2ร14', 2ร12'. Invoice has 4ร16', 2ร12'. You'll cut down 2 of the 16' pieces to 14' lengths. Total footage covered.
Sloped joist hangers for stairs: Plan A3.3 requires 625 lb capacity. Simpson LSCZ or similar. Order these before starting stairs.
Trex plug-system screws: The 2" screws on hand are labeled "Enhance boards only." Ask Bushka which screw seats the Rainier plugs in Transcend Lineage boards (~150 needed).
Stair tread choice: Two 2x6 per tread from the Order #2 stock (recommended โ on hand), or buy 3ร 2x12x8 for single-board treads. Either way, add riser boards (one 2x6 each) so no stair opening passes a 4" sphere.
Positive Substitutions (Better Than Plan Spec)
The hardware store made several UPGRADES from the plan spec that you benefit from:
Trex Transcend Lineage instead of generic 5/4x6 composite โ premium line with 50-year warranty
Trex 1x12 composite fascia instead of 1x10 PT wood โ better for pool environment, matches deck color
2x12 stringers instead of 2x10 โ stronger stair support
Trex Protect joist tape โ not in plan, but excellent for water protection on a pool deck
Longer beam lengths (16' vs 14'-6") โ extra material for adjustments
Items to Discuss with Inspector Before Starting
Pool safety barrier requirements โ CT may require 48" barrier around pools. Verify if the 36" deck rail satisfies pool barrier code, or if additional gates/fencing needed.
Freestanding deck footings โ Confirm your pour depth passes CT frost requirements (typically 42" minimum in most of CT; some jurisdictions require 48"). Plan A2.0 shows footings at 5'-0" underside-to-grade which exceeds both.
Diagonal bracing plan โ Some inspectors want a specific layout diagram of diagonal bracing before construction.
Composite decking approval โ Trex Transcend Lineage is IRC-approved but confirm with local inspector.
